Welcome to the Center of Advanced Biological Technologies!

The Center of Advanced Biological Technologies, or CABT for short, is a scientific and technologic center, organized by a group of scientists from the Institute of Genetics & Plant Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Each member of the CABT group has spent his/her entire adult life in activities related to biological sciences. The group had been functioning informally for more than 5 years, when CABT was formally registered in April 1999, as a Scientific and Technological Center.

General tasks of the CABT include:

  1. Providing researches in the field of the Molecular Biosciences;
  2. Consolidation of the scientists capable to conduct modern researches and to elaborate new technologies;
  3. Creation a system of methods and equipment necessary for providing research and to elaborate new proceedings and technologies on the basis of the CABT;
  4. Facilitate the exchange of scientific and technological information between biologists, related scientists and technologists in general and especially in Moldova by advertising, discussions and by other appropriate means;
  5. Organization courses of lectures and of practical experience for students and graduate students in the field of molecular biosciences;
  6. Carrying out the service of orders for analyses.

Specific tasks of the CABT include:

  1. Elaboration of preparations of native substances that help to adapt plants, animals, and human to different stress factors;
  2. Optimization of conditions for cultivation algae and plant callus in vitro for rising of the output of secondary metabolites and biologically active substances;
  3. Selection of plant genotypes with high contents of biologically active substances;
  4. Search for nontraditional sources of biologically active substances from waste of wine and food industry;
  5. In vitro micropropagation of valuable genotypes;
  6. Capitalization of valuable species and genotypes of plants.

CABT is committed to improving the transformation of new knowledge in new technologies, creating new products and services, enhancing and protecting environment. A special aspect of our investigations is their vectoring to new products and technologies, crucial for development of commercialization.   Professionals from different filed of sciences are at the heart of this creative process. Our scientists and engineers work in research and development functions that are based on short-term research for product development.

CABT is the supporting the young scientists to develop their professional and interpersonal skills, help to create their future through science and technology. We are urging for people with a deep desire to work for progress their fields to develop the technologies of the future and to pursue the excellence. The young people that demonstrated academic excellence and work performance have the opportunity to continue their scientific career advancement at the CABT, to develop the characteristics of future leaders. One of the best benefits of working for the CABT is the opportunity to work on different areas of science and to collaborate closely with experts in many fields. 
For students the practice at the CABT is an excellent way of learning new methods and gain meaningful experience. An opportunity for accomplishment the graduate student programs in the fields of Plant Sciences, Biology, Bioengineering, and Biotechnology exists.
CABT is acting for increasing benefits of rural society from scientific discoveries and new technologies and serving as an instrument of sustainable rural development through application of scientific and technological knowledge. The primary activity of the CABT is to undertake research projects to study, develop, standardize, implement, commercialize and popularize innovative and sustainable appropriate rural technologies.
CABT is a Moldovan organization and its projects are specifically aimed at development of Moldova. However, most of the technologies being developed and promoted are universally applicable. We offer different research and development facilities, including those offered by biochemical, biophysical, physiological, and biotechnological departments and as well the experimental field, which is located in Chisinau. There are over 15 scientists and engineers working for CABT. We are collaborating with more than 10 scientific and technological organizations in elaboration new procedures, products and technologies.

Obtained results:
1. We have elaborated a system of screening native substances which includes plant cell culture, culture of isolated roots, green algae, plants seeds with different level of dormancy, germinated seeds and mature plants. Biological objects of this system were exposed to different combination of stress factors (gamma irradiation, high and low temperatures, infections with fungus) and native substances. The test reactions are determined by parameters of germination, growth rate, intensity of photosynthesis, electrolyte leakage, molecular polarization, specter of proteins, isoenzymes analysis etc.

2. Using the newly developed bioassay techniques, we have studied the influence of native substances on callus growth of Rhodiola rosea, which was introduced in vitro. The optimized method of propagation in vitro was elaborated and patented.

3. A collection of genotypes of Rhodiola rosea of Carpathian origin is organized and the biological and agrotechnical conditions for their cultivation were elaborated. Actually about 50 000 of 1 year viable rhizomes obtained from generatively and in vitro propagated plants were obtained. They will be utilized for reintroduction in Carpathian area and for creation the artificial field plantations.

4. Acting with different physical factors (temperature and illumination) on callus, we obtained callus cultures of Rhodiola rosea. One of the most promising activities is related with determining the influence of different physical factors and elicitors on the accumulation of secondary metabolites in callus cells.  Further investigations in this direction are in course of progress.

5.  Reglalg, the preparation of native substances extracted from algae that grown in special conditions was elaborated. It is effective for treating seeds before sowing and plants during vegetation. The biological activity of Reglalg is based on stimulation of the development root system; augmentation (conditioning) of plant capacity to form systemic acquired resistance (SAR). These results were confirmed in four-year experiments on the Experimental Fields of the Institute if Genetics & Plant Physiology. Active components of the preparation are in specific composition and dissolved in ethyl alcohol. The solution is not toxic for human beings or animals.

6. In the field experiments, by treatment of grapevine and cucumber plants during vegetation with native substances from algae, their protection from fungal pathogens was mentioned.
